The Derby Runner cross-country league final took place in Burton at the Shobnall course, which is just over 5 miles long, hilly and very muddy. The rain held off for the race, which had a much smaller attendance than previous ones, affected by the Belvoir challenge the day before. The race did not count towards the overall club league placings which were decided after the last meeting, but was a chance for runners to get individual and team prizes for the one-off race, and also comprised the overall league team and individual presentations post race.Ivanhoe had nine representatives running, with enough women for a team but sadly not the men. Everyone had a good run in the challenging conditions, with a bit of an icy wind blowing, but the decreased attendance numbers meant that conditions underfoot weren’t as churned up as they could have been. For the men, Martin Yeomans led Ivanhoe home in 33rd place in a time of 40.36, with Allan Birch 48th in 42.26, and Dave Mann 55th in 43.15.
Laura Johnson, running second claim for Ivanhoe came in 3rd in 39.00. Rosie Dear was next in 15th place despite running in road shoes, in 49.25, with Teresa Talbot close on her heels placing 18th in 50.04, and Amanda Bradbury again close in 20th place in 50.57. Trish McPherson came 24th in 52.44, with Heather Swan again battling for the club gaining 29th place in 58.45. This meant that the Ivanhoe ladies were 4th team demonstrating the depth of ladies runners in the club, as many clubs could not post a team. Hopefully this depth will continue into next season.
In the final league placings, Ivanhoe's Men were 5th overall in the second division; this was a credit to those who participated, but more depth in the men’s team is needed for them to strive for the top 2 places to get back into division one. The women were 4th overall in first division - a great performance, and one that can be built on for next season. The combined team were 7th overall, so well done to all those who participated this season.
